McFadden and McIntire (McAteer) family history

Brace yourselves for a long post!

We recently received an email (March 2022) from someone who has Doaghbeg roots. They stumbled upon our website, and they were able to send us on some fantastic information relating to their ancestors who descended from Doaghbeg in the mid to late 1700s. Given how scarce historical records are in Ireland, this is the earliest find we have made in relation to people descending from Doaghbeg. We were also provided photos of some of these people which further adds to the significance of this discovery.

During our initial research, we relied on Tithe records from 1834 and the Griffiths Valuation records from the 1850s to determine the people and names of Doaghbeg. Anything before that is scarce as records simply did not exist. Therefore, this find is huge.

We are not sure if these McIntires are related to any of the more recent McAteers of Doaghbeg, but there may be a connection somewhere. We have never been able to find McFaddens in Doaghbeg until now.

There’s a lot of information below, but it’s important that it’s summarized and retained for future generations.

John William McFadden (1796-1880) was one of Charles’ sons and was born in Doaghbeg. He left for the US in 1811 from Derry on the ship ‘Harmony’. John left with Charles McIntire (1787-1862), and Charles’ wife Bridget Coll, and their daughter Ann (who John McFadden later married) and Charles McIntire's in laws Bridget and Bernard Lynch. They arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 2, 1811.

They met up with Charles McIntire's cousin, John McIntire (1797-1875) who left Doaghbeg on July 16th, 1810. There will be more information on Charlies and John McIntire in the next section.

John William McFadden married Ann McIntire (1807-1885) as mentioned, daughter of Charles.

After digging canals in Pennsylvania, John William managed to put together with several other Irishmen a company that built steel canal barges. From there he started a railroad building company on his own that built several lines in Pennsylvania.

When his two sons – Charles (1830-1895) and Hugh (1833-1885) were old enough they joined the firm as McFadden and Sons, which built several lines. Then Charles McFadden went out on his own and built most of the railroads, tunnels and bridges in Pennsylvania. Charles built three of the four railroads in the game of Monopoly - The Pennsylvania, The Reading and The Short Line. Charles became extremely wealthy.

John’s son Charles McFadden (1830-1895) married Sarah Amanda McIntire (1830-1926, daughter of John McIntire) and they had the following children.

John’s other son Hugh McFadden (1833-1885) married Mary Jane McIntyre (1836-1913, also a daughter of John McIntire meaning two brothers married two sisters). They had the following children:

- Harry Martin McFadden (1872-1930). Married Marie Monahan (1882-1954).

Update:  May 23rd 2022

Chuck McFadden (a direct descendant of the above Doaghbeg folk) along with his wife Theresa and daughter Cady Coe visited Doaghbeg and met with Eddie Sweeney, Una McGrory, Mary O'Doherty, Josephine McGroarty and Bried Sweeney.  They made the trip to Doaghbeg beach and our visitors were fascinated by the trip. Chuck and family had a wealth of knowledge on their ancestors.

A DNA result on Ancestry.com also confirmed that Cady is indeed related to the Sweeney/McAteer connection of Doaghbeg!

They also shared this chart of the McFadden/McIntire family.
